How have colonialism and migration shaped what it means to be Filipino, Filipina, or Filipinx? How do those histories influence the ways we understand gender, identity, and belonging today?
Dr. May Farrales leads this interactive workshop on how colonialism, migration, and gender have shaped Filipino, Filipina, and Filipinx identities.
Through conversation, reflection, and collaborative art-making, participants will examine familiar stereotypes, explore gender diversity, and consider what Filipina/x identity can be on these lands.
Dr. Farrales is an interdisciplinary Filipinx scholar and faculty member in Geography and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University. Her work brings Filipinx diaspora studies into conversation with critical Indigenous studies, critical race studies, feminist geography, queer theory, and Black geographies. Her teaching and research focus on racialization, queer politics, settler colonialism, and systems of power.
This workshop takes place in Calgary, on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut'ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation within Alberta (including Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6).
